How to Care for Your Handloom Cotton Sungudi Saree

Temple of Sungudi
A handcrafted Madurai Sungudi saree is an investment in heritage. Because these sarees are woven on handlooms and often dyed using natural colors, they require a little extra love and care compared to synthetic fabrics. Proper maintenance ensures that the vibrant colors and soft texture last for generations.
Step-by-Step Washing Guide
- First Wash: We strongly recommend dry cleaning the saree for the first time to set the colors.
- Subsequent Washes: Hand wash the saree gently in cold water using a mild, pH-neutral liquid detergent.
- No Soaking: Do not soak the saree for extended periods. Quick, gentle dips are best to prevent color bleeding.
- Drying: Never wring the saree. Gently squeeze out excess water and dry it in the shade, away from direct sunlight.
Ironing and Storage
Iron your Sungudi saree while it is slightly damp, or use a steam iron on the cotton setting. Store the saree in a breathable cotton or muslin bag. Avoid plastic covers, and remember to unfold and refold the saree every few months to prevent permanent creases or tearing at the folds.
