Temple of Sungudi
Draping a saree for the first time can feel daunting, but a Sungudi cotton saree is actually one of the best fabrics to learn with. Its crisp texture holds pleats beautifully, and its lightweight nature makes the process far more manageable than a heavy silk saree. Here is a step-by-step guide to the most popular Nivi draping style.
What You Will Need
- Your Sungudi saree (lightly dampened or recently ironed for crisp pleats)
- A well-fitted blouse and petticoat that matches your saree color
- 4-6 safety pins
- A mirror (full-length preferred)
Step-by-Step Draping Guide
Step 1: Tuck the First End
Start at your right side. Tuck the plain end of the saree (the end without the decorative pallu) into the waistband of your petticoat, going all the way around your body once.
Step 2: Make the Pleats
Hold the fabric in front of you and make 6 to 8 pleats, each about 5 inches wide. Keep them even and facing left. Tuck the pleats into the center of your waistband and secure with a pin.
Step 3: Drape the Pallu
Take the remaining fabric (the decorative pallu end), bring it up and drape it over your left shoulder. It should fall naturally down your back. Pin it to your blouse at the shoulder for security.
